UNITS OF POWER.

A project made possible by Haringey Council, Children & the Arts, The Saatchi Gallery, Northumberland Park Community School, St Paul’s and All Hallows Primary School and Risley Avenue Primary School.

The title of this project ‘Units of Power’ alludes to the collective power of a community or group of people. During the project pupils have been reminded of their own individual importance, their intrinsic value as young citizens. Individually we can make a difference to the world around us but joined, linking, united we can affect change on a much larger scale. These ideas have been made concrete through sculpture.

Throughout the project pupils were in a position of power. Enabled to make choices about the direction of their work. Each set of pupils, from each school, worked together to make choices about how they would work, what they would make and how they might make it.

Each individual pupil can trace their influence through the project, from our first meeting at the Saatchi Gallery, though working on sculptures and ideas in his/her school to making his/her own section ( or unit ) of the collaborative sculpture that now stands in their school grounds.

During the final weeks of the project pupils will visit other’s schools involved in the project and lead tours for schools visiting their own artworks. The finale of the project will be a community walking tour of all three artworks, with each school opening its doors to the local community; pupils, families and friends of the school.

We have, in a small way, changed Haringey and we have, I hope, shown pupils the power of collective collaboration.
