Each work is a remaking of a crossword, not the puzzle, not the questions, just the grid, the pattern, the odd symmetry. The numbers for each answer are left in place, hinting at the lost function of the original ‘thing’, the original puzzle, taken from the world, adjusted and put back into the world as a painting.
The works are a nod to modernist abstraction, the grids and minimalism of painters long dead, but at the same time are very everyday, referencing something we’ve all turned a page to see, something we might see different next time we come across one.
